A dictionary definition of embroidery is the process of decorating fabric with thread. We at Wyvern Productions feel that embroidery is an art form not limited to fabric alone, and each stitch is a brush stroke. Medieval & Renaissance EmbroideryAlmost as long as clothing has been around, man has used embroidery to embellish it. Ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Phoenicians and Hebrews and Moors decorated their clothing with embroidery. Moorish embroidery influenced much of western Europe, including the blackwork that became a court standard in the early Renaissance. Ladies PocketsMen started using pockets in the mid-1500's. Ladies began to wear detached pockets in the mid-1700's and remained in use for nearly 100 years. Our pockets are based on existing designs found at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Viking Designs and ApparelSome of the primary examples of Viking embroidery were found in the period graves at Valsgärde in Sweden. These date to the 10th Century and indicate designs done in wool, silver and probably linen threads. The influence of the Vikings can also be seen in Celtic designs, and vice versa. Scottish DesignsEvery year, people in the United States and Canada celebrate their Scottish heritage on Tartan Day, April 6.
