Heralds

elizabethan-herald-2a.jpg (146381 bytes)The herald of arms is an officer of arms ranking between pursuivant (apprentice), herald, and king of arms. The title is often applied erroneously to all officers of arms. Heralds were originally messengers sent by their liege lord to convey messages, make proclamations, negotiate peace treaties and otherwise serve as a representative of their liege. Like other officers of arms, a herald would often wear a surcote, or tabard, decorated with the coat of arms of his lord. It was possibly due to their role in managing tournaments that heralds came to be associated with the regulation of the knights' coats of arms. This science of heraldry is still overseen by heralds in many parts of the world.

Herald's Tabard

elizabethan-herald-tabard-1a.jpg (194466 bytes)A tabard is a short coat with short sleeves or shoulder pieces. Tabards of heralds are emblazoned on the front, back and sleeves with a coat of arms, and in this form they survive now as the distinctive garment of officers of arms in heraldry.

In the United Kingdom the different ranks of officers of arms can be distinguished by the fabric from which their tabards are made. The tabard of a king of arms is made of velvet, the tabard of a herald of satin and that of a pursuivant of damask silk. It was once the custom for pursuivants to wear their tabards with the sleeves at the front and back, but this practice was ended during the reign of James II and VII.
